Sports & Leisure

There are many different sports and leisure activities you can do throughout Birmingham.

There are clubs such as Gateway which holds discos and outings for adults with disabilities and Sunrise 83 which holds 2 social events per week in the evenings where people can meet and play darts, snooker and pool.

Other available clubs are the West Midlands Leisure and Sport Society which is a club for people with and without disabilities. They meet weekly in Edgbaston and compete with other counties in sporting challenges.

There are lots of leisure centres available throughout Birmingham which hosts swimming sessions, gym, aerobics other classes like Pilates and Tai-Chi. You can find your local leisure centre by checking www.leisure.birmingham.gov.uk/index

If you’re planning on going to the cinema or theatre or perhaps arranging a visit to a place of interest for the first time, it’s a good idea to make some plans before you go. Places vary in their facilities and what they have to offer disabled people. Make sure you check they are accessible for your needs!

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) aims to end discrimination against disabled people. Places including cinemas, theatres and other leisure venues have responsibilities towards disabled people.

Service providers in the public sector - such as museums, libraries, historic buildings and other places of interest - also have duties regarding access to their services.

Service providers have a responsibility to let the people who work for them know about the duties and responsibilities under Part 3 of the DDA.
