I like that staff accept my apology when I have been angry at them, and we can carry on having a good relationship.

Ellie’s Story

What good care looks like to me

  • I like that the staff support me and talk calmly when I am upset.
  • I like that I live with other residents, and they now feel like family members to me.
  • I like that staff and management always think of creative activities that I would like and support me to make plans to do these activities, for example staff arranged for me to clean stables and look after horses, I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of my staff.
  • Staff support me with my finances and help me buy anything I like; they help me to buy my favorite things like concert tickets and things off amazon.
  • I like that staff listen to me and take me seriously when I say I want to change my diet to vegan, vegetarian etc. and then help me cook meals that match what I want.
  • I like that staff accept my apology when I have been angry at them, and we can carry on having a good relationship.
  • I like that staff have supported me when I decided to change my identity from male to female, staff helped me buy new clothes and respected the name I wanted to be called.

What bad experiences I have had in care

  • Managers of my old care provider used to shout at me when I was angry and threaten me.
  • Staff at my old care provider would not respect my choice to change gender identity and this made me feel uncomfortable in my own skin.
  • Managers at my old care provider used to argue with my boyfriend and made me feel bad for wanting to spend time with him.
  • Management at my old provider would not allow me to spend my money and I would have to rely on my boyfriend to go out with and buy me things.
  • When I was in care as a child, I felt like they only cared about the money they got paid for looking after me and they did not care about me or what I wanted/felt.
  • I have had some staff at my old provider that just spend their time on their phone and pay no attention to me or give me any support.
